Caleb's Bed

So I found a steal of a deal on Craigslist last year. A toddler bed from probably the 1940's with mattress for $20. I know right? Apparently the owner had tried to donate it to Salvation Army but they wouldn't accept it because it was too big… Can't say I'm disappointed.

This BARELY fit in my equinox… as in maybe kinda didn't but I forced it to. Jacob was NOT excited at all that I was buying a bed "for no reason"… he was obviously wrong ;)

The first "issue" with the bed is it in a size that they don't make bedsheets for. It's "Youth" sized, which is smaller than a twin and bigger than a toddler… aka exactly the right size for a tall 3 year old. The only other issue is I wasn't a huge fan of the cute vintage details… Now that I'm putting this online I'll probably find out that this bed was worth big money and I ruined it's value or something… here are the cute bears… may they rest in peace…

Alright now that we've said goodbye to the bears here's what I did… I became fascinated with the idea of chalk paint… but being far too cheap to actually buy any I read 800 different diy recipes and suggestions and then decided to wing it. This was my "recipe"

1 Part Powered Plaster of Paris
1 Part Warm Water
(Stir)
2 Parts Paint

Did I measure you ask? Um… no, I just eyeballed it off the side of the cup I was using, I recommend you do the same.

I used a low VOC paint with primer in it and then read online that you should NEVER use a paint with primer in it while doing the whole "diy Chalk Paint" thing… I didn't have any issues though, yay me!

Caleb helped a little and I managed to completely tump my little bucket of Chalk paint all over my iPhone… thankfully we have LifeProof cases so I just panicked a little, ran inside and ran it under the facet for awhile… Best phone accessory ever. Zero damage and we're gonna be customers for as long as apple keeps manufacturing phones fit for houseplants instead of humans. Anyway a couple of coats later we ended up with a beautiful gray bed :)

I also made a cute little bedskirt/bumper pad for the metal frame because Caleb kept banging his shins into when he jumped into bed. Maybe I'll eventually make one for the other side and post pictures of how I made it and how I made the matching one for James' crib. All in all I am very very happy with our sweet little antique bed.
